What can this research cover?
The following source directions are assessed before the assignment is confirmed; not every collection is available for every period or place.
- Archival collections relevant to the topic
- Historical publications and source guides
- Institutional or local documentary material
- Client-supplied papers and research leads
Starting information and research planning
Explain the intended use, period, geography and questions to be answered. We agree a manageable scope and distinguish primary evidence, published interpretation and unresolved issues.
How the research works
- Define the question, scope and agreed deliverables.
- Assess relevant sources and their access conditions.
- Search, compare and record references and uncertain readings.
- Present findings, limitations and recommendations for follow-up.
Agreed deliverables
Each deliverable is defined in the proposal before work begins.
- A summary of the search scope and sources consulted.
- Relevant document references and accessible copies where permitted.
- An explanation of findings, potential matches and remaining gaps.
- Transcription, translation or certified copies when separately agreed and available.
Research limitations
Record survival, access and the quality of identifying information set the limits of a search. Not finding an entry in the sources reviewed does not prove that a person or event did not exist. MIRAS is independent and is not a government archive or certifying authority.
Frequently asked questions
Can the project cover several countries?
A cross-border scope can be proposed after reviewing archive access, language requirements and specialist availability. Coverage is confirmed for the assignment rather than presumed.
